Analysis of existing research and publications 2002 - 2024

A research paper on the most effective ways to involve girls and women in STEM. This research was done with the support of members of the EU STEM Coalition, and will be relevant to schools as well as national and European level governing bodies.

Introduction:

It is no news that there is a significant gender gap in STEM fields, with women being under-represented, particularly in computer science and engineering. Many countries in Europe face this challenge and are working on projects and programs to change the outcome of the current situation.

This article gives an overview of the challenges and solutions related to the underrepresentation of girls and women in STEM as studied by many researchers and other organizations. These studies have added to the numerous studies of earlier decades.

With the new European Commission focusing on STEM by presenting a Strategic STEM Education plan, including focus on women/girls in STEM, we can learn from these studies and use the recommendations for future approaches for all stakeholders involved: the (European/national/regional) governments, education and industry partners – also called the Triple Helix partners.
