Abstract: 

The EU STEM Coalition's main partner in Finland (LUMA) recently published an English version of their extensive 180-page e-book describing all of LUMA's activities in Finland. As a network or regional LUMA-centres organised in and around universities throughout Finland, LUMA's activities particularly stand out because of their strong foundation in research. COVID-19 series: Finland - LUMA goes fully electronic

Abstract: 

LUMA Centre Finland, the network of Finnish universities has gone fully digital in an extensive quantum leap. Due to the lockdown of the country including its educational sectors that has been in place since March, the LUMA community was forced to shift to virtual platforms and activities almost overnight. LUMA activities have been supported by online resources for years which facilitated the quick adaptation of interactive virtual events, camps, workshops and scientific and educational meetings. Currently, thirteen virtual courses are offered for teachers, educators and teacher students through the LUMA network. Some of these courses are included as teacher training courses for teachers in training in different fields of sciences.

 

One of the biggest challenges has been to take the StarT Science Festivals (one of LUMA's largest activities) online by introducing StarT Go Edu! This is a virtual science club in which anyone can participate anywhere at any time. Accessed through the LUMA website (see below) it allows one to join in and indulge various aspects of scientific research: Just watch the videos, see the instructions and carry out your own investigations - and observe the environment!

 

New activities, training materials, adaptations of various scientific topic are currently being developed by researchers and teachers in collaboration and co-operation. simultaneously research projects are launched to support the development projects and the assessment of the impact of the activities. Recent findings and results will be shared via the LUMAT virtual conference on science education in the beginning of June.

StarT Finland

Short summary: 

StarT is the flagship programme of the LUMA Centre Finland (Finnish STEM platform).

Description and objectives: 

StarT is the flagship programme of the LUMA Centre Finland (Finnish STEM platform). Launched in 2016, the programme's main objective is to bring science, mathematics and technology closer to children and youngsters through interdisciplinary, project-based collaborative learning. The programme is implemented by LUMA Centre Finland (network between 13 regional STEM education centre within Finnish universities) through 'learning communities', supported by collaboration partners including the Finnish National Agency for Education and companies in the field of science and technology like IBM.

 

The StarT programme is implemented on three levels:|
 

  1. Local level: kindergartens, primary schools, high schools, and extracurricular activity groups participating in StarT
     
  2. Regional level: StarT festivals organized all around Finland by the LUMA centers together with local partners (does not apply to non-Finnish participants)
     
  3. National / International level: the LUMA Centre Finland organizes the StarT Gala, where teams chosen by the StarT jury – also non-Finnish teams – are awarded
     

In these levels, the StarT programme supports project-based learning in the local learning communities, StarT festivals and a national/international StarT gala.

The overall feedback has been excellent. For example, in relation to a math related learning project teachers noted that: “Children have learned to create their own ideas, to solve problems in a team, work together to overcome difficulties, associate the amount of things with numbers, improved perception of time and counting skills. During the festival they developed not only mathematical skills, but also improved their social skills.” In school year 2016-2017 support material was sent through the StarT newsletter to 500 learning communities in Finland. There were ca. 10 000 participants (kids/youth/teachers/educators) in StarT learning communities, ca. 1000 participants in regional StarT festivals and ca. 400 participant in national/international StarT Gala.

Reach: 

In the 2016-2017 school year, the StarT programme supported 400 learning communities from Finland and 350 learning communities from abroad with participants from 36 countries. 

Budget and funding model: 

StarT learning projects are carried out in learning communities like day care centres, kindergartens, schools etc. around the country and funded by themselves. Regional and national StarT marketing as well as the regional StarT festivals and national/international StarT Gala are funded by the Finnish universities and the sponsoring companies.

Research and Innovation Performance Finland: Country Profile 2014

Abstract: 

The indicators in the report present a synthesis of research and innovation performance in Finland. They relate knowledge investment and input to performance and economic output throughout the innovation cycle. They show thematic strengths in key technologies and also the high-tech and medium-tech contribution to the trade balance. The indicator on excellence in science and technology takes into consideration the quality of scientific production as well as technological development. The Innovation Output Indicator covers technological innovation, skills in knowledge-intensive activities, the competitiveness of knowledge-intensive goods and services, and the innovativeness of fast-growing enterprises, focusing on innovation output. The indicator on the knowledge-intensity of the economy focuses on the economy’s sectoral composition and specialisation and shows the evolution of the weight of knowledge-intensive sectors and products.

LUMA

LUMA Centre Finland is the network for 13 regional LUMA centres within Finnish universities. The network ensures a national and international collaborative ecosystem to develop mathematics, science and technology education by providing activities and accessible resources throughout the country. The current LUMA ecosystem is a social innovation in which universities, schools, teachers, students, guardians, and industry are collaborating to engage all children and young people from age 3 to 19 in math, science, and technology and supporting research-oriented teachers at all levels for life-long learning. The LUMA Centre Finland promotes and fosters both national and international collaboration between educational institutions from kindergarten to universities, the business sector, educational administration, science museums and centers, teachers’ associations, and the media, as well as all other relevant organizations. The aim of the LUMA is mathematics, science and technology for all. The activities of LUMA Centre Finland reach altogether 400 000 persons (children, youth, guardians and teachers) each year.
