Automotive Skills Alliance (ASA)

The Automotive Skills Alliance (ASA) is a European non-profit, multi-stakeholder partnership and the large-scale Pact for Skills partnership for the automotive-mobility ecosystem.

Launched in November 2020 and established as a legal entity in January 2022, ASA brings together more than 120 members across the automotive value chain, including industry, social partners, education and training providers, regions, municipalities and public authorities.

ASA’s work focuses on upskilling and reskilling the automotive workforce for the green and digital transition, with specific expertise in skills intelligence, competence and job-role frameworks, training provision and recognition, micro-credentials, regional implementation, and industry-education cooperation.

ASA operates in the context of a major industrial and social transition, where the European automotive sector must adapt to electrification, digitalisation, automation, sustainability and new mobility models. ASA does not have a formal government mandate, but it operates within the European Pact for Skills framework and supports EU-level skills-policy implementation for the automotive-mobility ecosystem.

Activities and experience relevant for the EU STEM Coalition

ASA is an EU-wide entity, covering the whole of Europe. Its activities are directly relevant to the EU STEM Coalition, as ASA connects industry, education and training providers, social partners, regions and public authorities around future and mostly STEM-related skills for the automotive-mobility ecosystem.

ASA has experience with multi-stakeholder and triple-helix cooperation through the Pact for Skills, European projects, regional skills partnerships, working groups, workshops and policy exchanges. Its work includes skills intelligence, mapping of emerging job roles and competences, training coordination, micro-credentials, regional implementation and STEM-related career pathways.

An important recent outcome is the released Sectoral Skills Strategy for the Automotive-Mobility Ecosystem, which provides a shared strategic framework for addressing skills needs linked to the green and digital transition. Planned activities include further implementation of this strategy, expansion of the Skills Hub, development of the Automotive-Mobility Ecosystem Academy / Future Mobility Academy concept, and stronger cooperation with regions and education providers on skills recognition, learning pathways and STEM attractiveness.

Best practices

ASA addresses STEM education mainly as an umbrella and enabling platform. Its work highlights the need to make STEM education and technical careers more attractive, visible and better connected to real industrial transformation.

While many concrete activities are implemented directly by ASA members, ASA encourages, connects and promotes these practices across its network.

Examples include member-led initiatives with schools, VET providers and universities to present future mobility careers; European projects such as TRIREME, which support cooperation between industry, education and regions; and events such as the Skills Revolution Conference, which provide visibility to future skills, career pathways, role models and the importance of STEM education for the green and digital transition.
